A stellar career of 22 seasons came to an end. The Bambino began his career with the Red Sox for six seasons before being sold to the Yankees. For 15 seasons the world watched in amazement, to see one player become the home run king of baseball. His final season came in 1935 as a Boston Brave. Ruth went to the team in hopes of becoming a manager, but this never came about. He hit his last six of 714 career home runs as a Brave. He died in 1948.

Ronning was not resigned by the Minnesota Wild, and remained unsigned when the season began. Nieuwendyk signed with the Maple Leafs, Larionov signed with the Devils (to perhaps replace Nieuwendyk) and Messier did resign with the Rangers amidst speculation that he would retire. In addition to Ronning, other great players such as Adam Oates, Bryan Berard and Phil Housley remained unsigned when the season began. Ronning signed with the NY Islanders, Oates with the Oilers and Berard with the Blackhawks after the season began. Housley retired.

The others were not in the Eastern Division. Detroit finished the shortened season with a record of 86-70, while Boston was 85-70. The commissioner's office made no attempt to remedy the situation. The Tigers went on to lose the AL Championship against Oakland, who went on to win their first of three consecutive World Series.
