Ice Hockey: The International Game - Two teams made it out of the preliminary round of the 2002 olympics. Belarus was one, but who was the other?
The correct answer is 'Germany'
Germany advanced by beating the heavily favoured Slovakian team 3-0. They would beat Austria 3-2, and would move on past Latvia 4-1. Germany went 3-0-0 in the tournament, but would lose the next three games to Czech Republic 6-1, Canada 3-2, and then Sweden 7-1. Germany went on to lose to the United States 5-0 in the medal round.
Hockey Question 6
Hockey Lovers - Who scored the series-winning goal in the 1987 Canada Cup (nicknamed the Blades of Summer) to lead his team to a 6-5 victory in the final game?
The correct answer is 'Mario Lemieux'
Anyone who has seen the 1972 Summit Series (and who is Canadian, especially) would say that there was simply no greater moment in hockey than when Paul Henderson scored the 'Goal heard round the World' to complete the comeback and give Team Canada the victory in overtime. That goal is so etched in Canadian Hockey History that many would say that it is unthinkable that Henderson's goal could ever be matched or surpassed - and I'm not saying this one did - but Lemieux's goal at 18:34 of the third period (which is for all intents and purposes OT) taken from Wayne Gretzky to win the series 6-5 (which by the way all three games finished in the finals) was about as close as you can get to the incredible drama and joy realized in 1972! Lemiuex reached super-stardom after this tournament as he scored 4 game-winning goals including this one. The 'Great One', still led all in scoring with 21 points, and as mentioned he set-up Lemiuex's game-winner so he was still 'The Man' if you ask me-but Lemiuex had an awesome series and finished up with 18 points right behind Gretzky. It was in this series that Mario Lemiuex truly earned the right to be called 'Magnificent' and he went on to lead the Pens to a couple of Stanley's Cups to add to this Canada Cup before he retired due to illness.
Hockey Question 7
The Little Things About Hockey - How much does the puck weigh?
The correct answer is '6 oz.'
Even though it weighs 6 ounces, the puck can be shot between 90 and 100 m.p.h., and some shots have reached above 100. At the 2002-2003 All-Star Skills Competition, Al MacInnis of the St. Louis Blues won the hardest shot contest with a 98.9 m.p.h. slap shot.
Hockey Question 8
Joe Sakic, Hockey Sensation - What were his jersey numbers for his rookie season?
The correct answer is '8 & 88'
He later switched to 19 when he went to Colorado.
Hockey Question 9
Hockey Goons - In the 1987 playoffs between Philadelphia and Montreal, a fight occurred before the game even started. Who were the main combatants?
The correct answer is 'Claude Lemieux (Mon) - Ed Hospodar (Phila)'
Lemieux had an end-of-warmup ritual of shooting the puck into the opposing net. So Phila turned the net around before skating off. The Canadians turned it back so Lemieux could shoot. Then all hell broke loose. Ed "Boxcar" Hospodar and others came running onto the ice from the dressing room, some just in shorts and socks.
Hockey Question 10
No Horse Hockey Here - Which one of these persons has never been President of the NHL?
The correct answer is 'Conn Smythe'
Conn Smythe was offered the position, but declined.
